Pie industry can cope with the crunch - Holland's MD
Holland’s Pies’ Managing Director, Neil Court-Johnston has predicted further growth in 2009 for the leading pie and pudding manufacturer, claiming that their products are well placed to cope with the economic downturn.
Eight months into his role, the man who made it his mission to revive Holland’s, says that the humble pie traditionally fares well through the tough times:
“Of course, 2009 will be tough for the food industry but pies are a staple favourite that consumers have come to rely on for a great many years. In the last recession the pie business boomed because a proper pie or pudding is substantial, familiar and nutritious. Better still, a pie or pudding meal provides fantastic value for money.”
The MD also stated that 2009 held many challenges for Holland’s Pies that he’s looking forward to:
“This year, as well as focussing on our existing customers within the north west heartland, we see ourselves in more takeaways, pubs, clubs and universities.”
“There’ll be a detailed focus on the ways Holland’s can be a more responsible and supportive member of the community, such as sourcing ingredients locally. And we’ll also be taking a closer look at freshening up the brand.”
“I feel we have a lot to be optimistic about in 2009. Who knows? It could be the year of the pie!”
Holland’s employs over 400 people at its Lancashire base and is part of the chilled division of Northern Foods. The company enjoys a 60% share of the market across all channels in the north west, an area where 92% of people have heard of Holland’s Pies.
