Proper Pies and Puds

Holland's toast double success

Championship play off winners Burnley FC will become the fourth Premiership side to be supplied by Holland’s Pies, the North West’s leading supplier of pies and puddings, after storming to victory at Wembley in the 2009 Championship playoff final.

Holland’s Pies has a history of backing winners and along with Burnley, has been supplying premiership teams Manchester United, Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers for years. Holland’s also supplies Delias Smith’s Norwich City by personal recommendation.

Championship Play Off finalists Burnley FC fans ate free Holland’s pies, supplied by the company, by the hundreds before travelling to Wembley to watch their side’s amazing 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

Holland’s also paid for nearly 100 of their Claret-supporting workforce to go to the match, as well as sending a further 600 pies to be handed out for free at pubs around Wembley.

Burnley’s win caps an amazing year for Holland’s, with latest research showing that its North West share of the frozen pies market has risen from 68% to 75% in the last 12 months. (Research by A C Nielsen).

The number of chip shops supplied with freshly-baked Holland’s pies has also increased by 10% year on year, and each chip shop is also ordering more pies than ever before.

Neil Court-Johnston, MD of Holland’s, who sent his personal congratulations to Burnley FC, and made a special presentation to the chairman, Barry Kilby, believes the rise in sales can be directly attributed to the increased quality of its pies.

“With the help of our Pie Panel we’ve been reviewing the quality of all of our products and we’ve been listening carefully to our customers. We’ve revisited all the things people have traditionally loved about our pies and looked to retain and, where necessary, re-discover that love,” he said.

“The evolution of Holland’s pies and puddings is about creating the perfect recipes that can attract sales from a wider consumer base without losing our original following. That means taking a step ‘back to the future’ by revisiting our original 158-year-old recipes, to create a new ‘Best Ever Authentic Recipe’ range which can be eaten and enjoyed by all.”

Although meat and potato remains a firm favourite with football fans, Holland’s has just created a new cheese and onion pie, made with mature cheese sourced in Lancashire and produced from the milk of cows grazed exclusively on Bowland fells or Fylde pastures.  It’ is also the first ever Holland’s Pie to be awarded Vegetarian Society approval.
