Holland's launch new cheese and onion pie
Holland’s Pies, the North West’s best known producer of pies and puddings, has launched its new cheese and onion pie featuring local cheese and produced with the help of local people.
The new recipe, which represents a return to traditional ingredients and production values, has been developed with the help of Holland’s now famous ‘Pie Panel’ team of amateur pie tasters.
Holland’s Pie Panel has been working with the Holland’s team to review the quality of each and every one of Holland’s pies and puddings during recent months.
This new cheese and onion pie, made with mature cheese sourced in Lancashire and produced from the milk of cows grazed exclusively on Bowland fells or Fylde pastures, is the first entirely new Holland’s recipe to be launched as a result of their efforts. It’s also the first ever Holland’s Pie to be awarded Vegetarian Society approval.
Michelle Sigley, one of Manchester’s Pie Panellists said…
“I’ve really enjoyed the whole pie panel process, and being involved in creating the new cheese and onion recipe has been great. The old recipe was a firm favourite with many in the North West – including me! - but the use of real cheese from Lancashire really enhances the flavour. I’m certain everyone will think it’s a great improvement!”
Neil Court-Johnston, Managing Director of Holland’s added:
“With the help of our Pie Panel we’ve been reviewing the quality of all of our products and we’ve been listening carefully to our customers. We’ve revisited all the things people have traditionally loved about our pies and looked to retain and, where necessary, re-discover that love.
He continued...
“The evolution of Holland’s pies and puddings is about creating the perfect recipes that can attract sales from a wider consumer base without losing our original following. That means taking a step ‘back to the future’ by revisiting our original 158 year old recipes, to create a new ‘Best Ever Authentic Recipe’ range which can be eaten and enjoyed by all.”
One of only 30 creameries in Lancashire, Dew-Lay is the largest producer of Lancashire cheese with a 33% market share in the UK. This family run business recently won an award at the prestigious Nantwich Cheese Festival, together with several awards for North West Fine Foods Product of the Year & Best Dairy Product of the Year.
Holland’s employs over 400 people at its Lancashire base and is part of Northern Foods. The company enjoys a 60% share of the market in the North West, an area where 92% of people have heard of Holland’s Pies. Holland’s expects these figures to be boosted further by these improvements to the brand.
As part of the launch, Holland’s are also asking members of the
public to submit funny or interesting pictures to appear on their range
of promotional posters which appear in chip shops and outlets across
the North West. Past posters have featured scenes from 1940s pubs, as
well as more modern images.
If you would like your picture to be in with a chance of winning, get snapping and send them to: Leanne Holcroft
Holland’s new cheese and onion pie is available now, from chip shops and retail outlets throughout the North West.

I still remember the old cheese and onion pie from the 1970s'. The pie was layered with cheese then onion. Even though it was small it was the best pie ever.2nd was a meat and potato pie from a pie shop in gorse hill that used to be shipped from urmston and 3rd was birds eye mushroom feasts(not really a pie though).
Hi - Thanks for your message :-) The cheese & onion pie is a classic, have you tried our new and improved recipe including locally sourced cheese from Dewlay in Garstang?
