Firefighters to become ‘pie’romaniacs at Holland’s
Firefighters from Lancashire Fire and Rescue took part in some vital training in the cold store of Holland’s Pies and sampled some of the famous pastries after the exercise.
New breathing apparatus, which has to function in both very high and very low temperatures, was tested in the famous company’s cold store for an extended period to ensure it functioned correctly in freezing temperatures.
Station manager Paul Thompson from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said:
“We’re really grateful to Holland’s – and not just for the offer of the pies. Training in these conditions is essential to test the capabilities of our work apparatus so our priority is to make the best possible use of our time. The hot pies were welcome after we completed the training.”
David Rowlands of Holland’s said:
“We were pleased to provide the space and facilities needed for this important training. Naturally, we are delighted to assist our fire service in any way we can – they do a fantastic job.”
Despite the visit, fans of Holland’s Pies have no need to worry, the pies are completely safe. David explains:
“Obviously we take great care to ensure our products reach our customers in impeccable condition.
“This was a totally isolated exercise that didn’t involve fire, smoke or water. Not a single pie came to any harm. Although the firefighters did make light work of them afterwards!”
Holland’s Pies employs over 400 people at its Lancashire base and is part of the chilled division of Northern Foods. The company enjoys a 60% share of the market in the North West, an area where 92% of people have heard of Holland’s Pies.
