Four North West organisations, TLC- St Luke’s, Emmaus Salford, Age UK Manchester and Calderwood House, are calling for votes this week having reached the shortlist in a regional competition to receive a canteen kit out.
Part of the Hunger Busters campaign from the North’s favourite baker Hollands, the competition was launched to give worthy causes across the North West the opportunity to update their canteen with a new fridge and microwave as well as a stash of Holland’s Pies’ new Micro 2 Go® slices.
Launched following research that revealed only *38% of North West residents take a regular lunch break due to lack of time and facilities, the competition saw groups, businesses and households across the North West come forward for a chance to win the grand prize. The final four entries, including a social enterprise scheme and three charities, will now go to a public vote this week which will close on Thursday 16th February.
Emmaus Salford, a residential community for formerly homeless people, won a place on the shortlist after the panel of judges deemed its work to welcome, support and train formerly homeless people more than worthy of a place on the Hunger Busters shortlist. The charity relies on its kitchen to provide a place for residents and volunteers to enjoy meal times together and to keep the team well fed.
The second shortlisted charity, Age UK Manchester, delivers numerous impactful services from its Crossacres Community Resource Centre to support the elderly. This includes day care, home care, clubs and a Community Café which is in need of new white goods to help provide low-cost, fresh lunchtime meals to older people and the wider community.
TLC – St Luke’s, a charity that works with people living with mental health issues, was shortlisted for the range of fantastic services it provides from art classes to healthy living advice. Alongside the services offered by the group, its kitchen provides a hot meal twice a week to visitors, though its current fridge and microwave are on their last legs.
The final shortlisted charity, Calderwood House, is a group that works to provide a solution to homelessness and unemployment in West Cumbria, operating from a hostel facility. Part of TTC West Cumbria, the project was shortlisted in recognition of its work to provide three quality meals a day for its residents, as well as hostel and support services. The charity’s kitchen is the hub of the hostel and over the past 18 months has been used by over 60 residents, which means that the group are regularly having to raise funds for new equipment.
Showcased on the Holland’s Facebook page, the shortlisted groups now have one week to gain as many votes as possible to bag the grand prize which comprises of a fridge, a microwave and a stash of Holland’s brand new Micro 2 Go® slices. Offering a place to store and cook food, and with Holland’s slices taking just 90 seconds to heat, the prize is designed to ensure that the winning group will always have tasty treats to hand.

All of the groups on the shortlist stood out for the impressive work they undertake to help make the lives of the people in their communities better.”
